Elements of Competency Performance Criteria              
Element: Prepare for emergency situations
  • Identify potential workplace emergency situations and appropriate responses
  • Identify emergency resources and their location in the work area
  • Identify potential hazards and risks, and implement safe working practices to manage risks
  • Select, fit, use, maintain and store personal protective equipment (PPE) and safety and communications equipment
  • Identify and report unserviceable safety and communications equipment and PPE according to workplace procedures
       
Element: Identify and evaluate the emergency
  • Recognise and assess the identified or potential emergency situation risks, and effectiveness of initial response actions
  • Seek advice in evaluating the emergency from appropriate personnel
  • Determine emergency needs and priority, including any assistance that may be required
       
Element: Implement fire protection and control procedures
  • Minimise the risk of fire hazards and any hazardous fuelling procedures
  • Carry out workplace safety procedures for the handling and use of industrial gases
  • Use fire extinguishers and equipment appropriate to the fire situation, and notify authorities where applicable
  • Follow procedures for evacuation to nominated assembly points
       
Element: Confine the emergency where possible
  • Confine emergency to the immediate area using available resources
  • Carry out emergency procedures, and operate equipment using safe work practices
  • Use equipment safely in conjunction with other emergency actions
  • Assist with the evacuation of personnel and animals
  • Provide information required to assist emergency services
       
Element: Control the emergency situation
  • Evacuate casualties following workplace emergency procedures
  • Minimise the risk to self and casualties by minimising and isolating hazards where possible
  • Seek first aid assistance and advice where necessary
  • Record and report emergency situation response actions to supervisor

Assessment Tasks
